Going into this film I thought, you know I’ve given this movie a lot of stick and I haven’t even seen it yet. Okay the reviews aren’t that great but I love films that haven’t been critically well received but I liked the 2005 version of the Fantastic Four despite it’s low critical score. I appreciated it for what that was, maybe this will be more of the same. So, taking my seat, I went into Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice with an open mind. And then the damn bust and the river of awfulness flowed free, drowning many innocents while the Masters of Marvel watched on and knew there was nothing they could do to save their franchise.
I have now officially disembarked the hype train and have arrived in actually having seen the film station, where your destination is never guaranteed to be the one you want. The destinations have never been guaranteed for Star Wars fans and, after a few bad trips a decade ago, the Star Wars line has been resurrected and only fervent passengers have clambered aboard in hope that, this time, their destinations will be like the ones of old where all was new and untainted.
Well here we are, the end of traditional animation, or at least, the end of DreamWorks traditional animation efforts. I apologise at how long it’s taken me to produce these reviews but I hope you’ve been able to bear with me through all of this. But since it is the end let’s see how this ends, with a whimper or with a bang.
So here we are, at last. My second traditionally animated DreamWorks review! If you’ve not seen my first of these, then go check out The Prince of Egypt review right now. I mean it go on. I’m not starting until you’ve read it….. Read it yet? Well the hell with you then. Let’s get started, as we always do at The Chronic Chronicler, with the obligatory overview.
It’s 1519 and Tulio (Kevin Kline) and Miguel (Kenneth Branagh) are two con artists in Seville, Spain have just finished getting the last of the thug Zaragoza (Tobin Bell) of his gold when he produces a map to El Dorado, wanting to bet it for all the money he lost. With Miguel believing its authenticity, he gets Tulio to gamble it all for it, using Zaragoza’s non loaded dice. They win, but are soon seen for the con men they are and, after brilliant acting and a chase scene, Miguel and Tulio accidentally get on board a ship to the New World.
Though we don’t really need the obligatory overview for a Superman movie, it appears to be necessary in a review so I shall do it as briefly as possible. Man of Steel centres on the creation of Superman (Henry Cavill) and his struggle to remain hidden from a world which he fears may not accept him, whilst coming to terms with his powers and Kryptonian heritage. The main force of the film however centres on Superman’s battle with the rouge Kryptonian General Zod (Michael Shannon) and his aim of recreating the Kryptonian race after their home planet Krypton has been destroyed.
